Do I have to pay tax on money I inherited in Poland?
Hello,
I have a question which I hope you can help me with.
I am a polish citizen but have lived in Sweden and have been paying my taxes here for the last 6 years. My husband is Swedish. I inherited a house with my sister 20 years ago from my grandmother in Poland. She lived there until 2 years ago even though the house was ours. When she died we sold the house in Poland without the need to pay any taxes as my grandma payed for everything when she gave it to us 20 years ago. When myself and my sister sold the house we put all the money to her account since I don't have a polish account, so all the money is in her name for now. I would like to bring the money to Sweden but I feel really confused with the taxes in Sweden. Since I am not oblige to pay any taxes in Poland I was wondering how the situation looks in Sweden. I would really rather avoid paying unnessesary taxes if there is a way to solve it.
Do you have a solution to this?
Thankful for all help I can get.

Hi!
Since you were living in Sweden when you sold the house you need to pay tax on the sale. That the capital gain is not taxed in Poland doesn´t matter.
When you bring the money to Sweden you don’t pay any tax on the transfer.
Kind regards

Wait another 3 tax years before you bring your money home and ignore the Swedish irs. If they ask you about your polish account, just tell them it was a gift from your mother. Be aware that your polish bank might report interest to Swedish irs according to cars-depends what info they have on you. If you are registered as a polish subject, they will only report to the polish irs, ie tax authority.

Frankly speaking, since everything comes from your grandmas estate, I doubt anything will be reported to Sweden besides your cash transfer.

Hi,
When you buy a house in Sweden you need to pay the stamp tax that 1,5 percent of the buying price, for example if the price is 1 000 000 SKE, you need to pay 15 000 SEK.
Kind regards

However, you might have to set up an own account in your own name in Poland to transfer the money as some Swedish banks only accept name to name transfers. This you have to check with your Swedish bank. And if they ask anything, remember that the money is derived from your grandmas estate!
